Pick Your Own Strawberries

HomeActivitiesPick Your Own Strawberries
PYO

Experience picking your own strawberries fresh out of the fields with the majestic Outeniqua Mountains as your backdrop.

Choose a container size at the farm stall and head off to the strawberry picking rows where the real fun begins.  We grow a range of strawberry varieties and each variety is unique with differences in size and taste.

Take as long as you like.  Carefully inspect your berry before you pick it to make sure it is ripe and healthy.
If it is rainy and we still have picking available, make sure to wear gum boots!
You should be able to walk along narrow rows where the ground is uneven.
The whole family is welcome! Younger children will need plenty of supervision.
Small Bucket – R20 per person

Large Bucket – R30 per person

The sweetest strawberry is bright red, eaten at room temperature.

5 steps to picking like a pro

  1. Bend down to look through the plants, moving the leaves away to search for the best berries.
  2. Carefully select a berry that is bright red and does not have a white shoulder.
  3. Inspect the berry to make sure it is healthy and there are no bruises or holes.
  4. Break the strawberry off just above the calyx by holding the stalk between your thumb and pointy finger, and use a snapping motion to break off the strawberry stalk.
  5. Repeat. Once your bucket is full of delicious strawberries, exit the field.  Enjoy!

Quick Tip:

Strawberries are a fairly fragile fruit and should be handled gently otherwise they will bruise.

The green “hat” that tops a strawberry is known as the “calyx”.
